The C.G. Jung Foundation presents
Do You Want To Be Well?
Psyche and Miracle in the
Contemporary World
a daylong workshop led by
Alden Josey, Ph.D.
Saturday, March 6, 2010
10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
The archetypal human experience of miracle reaches across all times, all places and all conditions to lift us out of the limited frame of logical cause-and-effect thinking and into the realm of mystery and transcendence. Awe, fear, and reverence grip the one who
stands in the presence of power and action that is neither understood nor limited by a human conception, but rather comes as a given, a kind of epiphany. To call the experience of a miracle "archetypal" is to emphasize the universality of such events in human experience across space and time. These are moments charged with energy and emotion mediated through image and story in which "normal" ego consciousness is
faced with a reality that lies outside its boundary yet seems to call it to a new insight or understanding.
Edwin Burtt, a noted American Buddhist scholar and philosopher, wrote in Man Seeks the Divine:
In the patterns of thought which Western civilization has developed, the path of the human soul, in its quest for the real and stable happiness which constitutes salvation, is left largely in the realm of miracle and mystery, while knowledge about other processes, especially those occurring in the physical world, is organized into a systematic and impressive science.
To the extent that this is true, it has made us the bearers of a deep and influential split, a kind of soul wound, in the collective psyche of the West. In this seminar, we will examine from a Jungian perspective aspects of the miracle literature of the Judaeo-Christian tradition in search of a new orientation to its psychological depth and power. Our goal is nothing less than a rehabilitation of its neglected healing potential for modern life.
Alden Josey, PhD, NCPsyA, a former research scientist in the DuPont Company, is a Jungian analyst who was trained in Zurich and who practices in Wilmington, Delaware. He is past-President and Director of Training of the Philadelphia Association of Jungian Analysts.
