The C.G. Jung Foundation presents

Unbearable Choices

a daylong seminar led by
Rosanne W. Shepler, LPC, LP

Saturday, November 8, 2008
10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

“…The great decisions in human life usually have far more to do with the instincts and other mysterious unconscious factors than with conscious will and well-meaning reasonableness. The shoe that fits one person pinches another; there is no universal recipe for living. Each of us carries his own life-form within him — an irrational form which no other can outbid.” — C. G. Jung

One’s journey through life has many twists and turns, eventful and uneventful, but when we become stuck, there is nothing more helpless or upsetting. How often do we come to a major crossroad in life and become totally and miserably stuck feeling helpless and unsure? We may ask how we got here, what did we do to deserve this, and obsess on what we should do, but to no avail.

This workshop explores the roles of fate, family and one’s makeup as factors that impact who we become and the issues we must deal with in order to individuate, sometimes two very different things. Often we unconsciously carry unresolved family patterns that must be metabolized with conflicting opposites fighting to stay polarized. It is only through the experience of chaos, pain, and consciousness that there exists the possibility of unknown and valuable aspects of oneself to emerge. It is also from this space that the possibility of becoming more whole occurs and where choices are not so unbearable.

We will explore some of the archetypal underpinnings of these dynamics through the myth of Orestes, the fairy tale The Handless Maiden, and the human experience of falling in love. Each describes how one tries to survive as well as one’s relation to the Self. The final portion of the seminar will touch upon ways one can consciously begin to disengage and start making choices for one’s “self.”

Rosanne W. Shepler, LPC, LP,, is a Jungian analyst currently on the faculty of the C. G. Jung Institute of New York and the Education Committee for the Jungian Association of Washington Analysts. She resides in and has a private practice in Vienna, Virginia.
