Workshops and Seminars
Getting to the Heart of (the) Matter a daylong workshop led by Saturday, May 5, 2007 Our Judeo-Christian heritage privileges spirit over matter and often contributes to the view that the material world is the obstacle to be overcome in order to reach spiritual fulfillment. But we ask the question: Does matter matter? Is the material world always associated with vice, or can it be related also to virtue? Can the yearnings for power, material possessions, sex, money or status ever lead to a soulful journey? Many individuals attempt to fill insatiable black holes with pornography, alcohol, drugs, new toys … more toys … bigger toys. What is the psychological meaning of appetites that have become insatiable? What is the relationship between the individuation process and the material world? And can there be soul in matter? During this workshop we will address these questions. We will try to develop a psychological understanding of compulsions, addictions, appetites, and desires, and to discern the longings of the soul that are buried within pathology. We will try to understand the relevance of ego development, and how distorted instincts and thwarted ego development may inform us about the urge to individuation. The workshop will include the use of slides, archetypal images, clinical vignettes, and theoretical discussion.
