Workshops and SeminarsThe C.G. Jung Foundation presents
a daylong workshop led by Saturday, October 15, 2005
Jung described “fundamentalism” as the hallmark of the collective, non-individuated life. In this sense, fundamentalist beliefs work in opposition to the process of individuation, which invites an individual to hold multiple “truths” at the same time and still be able to function. Fundamentalism of any kind deeply affects psychological wholeness. This workshop will explore the benefits and dangers of “belief” and the deep attraction we feel toward fundamentalisms of all kinds. We will revisit the Seven Deadly Sins as way stations on life’s journey or the “soul journey.” We will draw upon politics, religion, and fairy tales and contrast them with the clinical setting and the process of individuation. We shall enter into the specifics of beliefs that liberate rather than possess, that foster consciousness rather than demand/condone unconscious obedience. Our aim shall be to establish an empathic linkage with aspects of our own “fundamentalisms” or non-individuated life, as we seek to more fully embrace the soul’s journey: our own individuation. Harry Fogarty, Ph.D., is a Jungian analyst in private practice in Manhattan and a lecturer in Psychiatry and Religion at Union Theological Seminary.
