Volume XXXVIII, No. 2, Summer 2008
From the Editor — Kathryn Madden
These past three issues have been very meaningful for me to participate in. The notion of compiling a series of essays in tribute to Philip Zabriskie came about as do all moments of creation paired with their opposite — death, destruction, something precious lost. Human beings have an extraordinary way of expressing the feelings, thoughts, inspiration of ideas, and struggles that provide a continuum with the presence of being that has departed, yet still exists. Something new comes into place and continues. In editing these pieces, I have reflected upon how simply remarkable it is to be able to engage with the life of another human being. I am so grateful to have been able to offer a “cauldron,” through Quadrant, of the written word in appreciation of Philip Zabriskie’s life. What follows are words of appreciation from Philip’s partner and wife, Beverley Zabriskie. — Kathryn Madden
“With Thanks”
The extraordinary collection of essays, dedicated to the memory of Philip T. Zabriskie, in this and the previous two issues of Quadrant, are a powerful and moving tribute to Philip. In these journals, Kathryn Madden, Quadrant editor, Janet Careswell, Exectuive Director of the C. G. Jung Foundation, and the authors of the outstanding essays have given recognition to Philip’s efforts to present and represent the values and theories of C. G. Jung to both the professional and public communities. Philip was a modest man, and so he would be surprised at the response to his life and death. He was a man who loved celebrations, and so would enjoy the gathering of energies to produce these collections. And he was a man of learning, and so would be immensely appreciative of these excellent contributions to post-Jungian thought.
He would also be astonished and proud of the Philip T. Zabriskie Memorial Lectures. The first was given last November by the scholar Sou Shamdasani. The second will be presented by the Psychologist James Hillman, at 7:30 pm, November 21, 2008, at the Rosenthal Pavillion of NYU’s Kimmel Center on Washington Square South.
These tributes have added texture to the fabric of memories that exist beyond Philip’s lifetime. I thank the authors Michael Adams, Joe Cambray, Linda Carter, Ann Casement, Harry Fogarty, James Hillman, Sherry Salman, Sonu Shamdasani, Murray Stein, David Tresan, Ann Ulanov, and Philip himself for the enlightening and compelling essays in these memorable issues of Quadrant. They have added to the presence of his absence. — Beverley Zabriskie
