Art and Psyche: Dreams and Art
5 Wednesdays, 6:30–8:00 pm
Beginning April 15
Instructor: Maria Taveras, LCSW
7.5 CE contact hours for licensed NYS Social Workers, Psychoanalysts and Creative Arts Therapists.
This course will explore the intimate relation between art and psyche. We will emphasize the role of dreams in the psychic origin of artistic creation. Every night by some mysterious process our psyches spontaneously generate dreams. From time immemorial we have wondered why dreams occur and what they mean. Our primary reference will be Daniel Bergez’s new book Painting the Dream: A History of Dreams in Art from the Renaissance to Surrealism. In PowerPoint presentations, we will view dream paintings that have attempted historically to depict accurately both the psychic dimension of art and the artistic dimension of psyche. In experiential exercises, we will also have an opportunity to paint our own dreams and compare the results to famous examples from the history of art. Participants will be invited to bring to class one of their own dreams, paint it, share and show it.
A follow-up course, Art and Psyche: Active Imagination and Art, will be offered in Fall 2020.
Fee for materials: add $25 to tuition fee.
